Post 10

This is the final outcome of my portrait shot. I’m pretty happy with it. Since I was creating a cold feeling, I didn’t want to many shadows present. Maybe a few on the dress to give it definition and also you can’t escape slight shadows even in a cold wooded area =].
Though I thought I would have done something a little more extravagant, maybe with the make-up, but I think the simplicity works here.
Also in the final poster I will be making her more pale and less colourful. Washed out possibly.

Since I missed my time slot to shoot, I don’t know what I should do. So to be on the safe side I set up a make shift studio and carried on with my work.
Here are some shots I was able to get, I have not edited them at all. I liked the one on the right more so decided to work with that one and I sent my print away on the saturday. Now looking at the images I think I prefer the one of her holding her hand out. I suppose it would have fitted better with the creepy side I am trying to convoy.
(A girl with no shoes on in the cold woods in a blue dress, holding out her hand to beckon you towards her) See now that seems a little better than, just a child standing there with their hands clasped. Hmm not so chuffed with my choice, but I think they both work so I can live with it, for now!

So as I had a bit of a miss-hap the other day. It has made me re-think my poster once again. I’m having to find a new model (easy enough, my sister). Also I have to change roughly my idea. I am using aspects of the Red-Riding Hood poster, such as the background, but I am creating it in a way that it makes it seem cold. I found this image and thought it was a great idea. The coldness of it will go well with my sisters skin.

What I was thinking of doing was shooting a similar image to this (minus the floating skull things) and placing Ryah in a pale blue dress, barefooted and having her face emotionless, just staring into the camera. I was also thinking of blending her slightly into the background. Just need to think of a film name now.

Sadly the week I was due to shoot in the studio at college, my model the night before decided she didn’t want to participate, and sadly I could not find anyone to fill in for me at such short notice.
I know things like this happen out in the real world, but you never think it is going to happen to you. This experience has just taught me that I should have back ups for anything that is time framed that I have going on. Lesson well learnt.
Though I have to admit that I was gutted about this since we are allocated a certain time to shoot in studio and I ended up missing it.

Post 6

I was watching X-factor the other night and saw the make up that “Little Mix” had been sporting. Wow I feel in love with it and thought I would share. This really makes me want to re-create a similar look and maybe make an “evil” doll poster (still within the fairy tale route). Kind of like the Chucky films I suppose, but sweeter.(though they aren’t fairy tale material.)
Here’s what the make-up looked like. I just thought I would share this, as it has made me think of many ideas for the future projects/ maybe a film poster idea to go back to.

I’m still sticking to the Red-Riding Hood idea.

Props I shall be using, a minimal white dress, which wont be that hard to find, and luckily my new model has a red hooded-cape from last year at Halloween, so that is very handy. Since I will be shooting in a studio, I won’t get the natural breeze blowing the cape as seen in this poster. So I have been thinking about using either the fan that is situated in the college or maybe bringing in some hairdryers. I’ll bring the hairdryers just incase.
Make up: Well this doesn’t show much of the face, and the fact I want to show the subjects eyes makes me think of maybe whitening her face a little and darkening the area around her eyes. The subject I shall be using has very blue eyes, so the darkness of the make up will hopefully contrast against her eyes and make them stand out considerably.

I have found someone to be my subject and I have also changed my mind on what I will be doing. I was thinking about the gruesome truths behind each Disney film such as Snow-white. Which made me think of recreating a Disney film but in a more sinister way.

This line of thought then lead me to thinking about other fairy tales so I decided to search for fairy tales retold and came across this film poster.

I love it, it’s dark and sinister. It’s a contrast on what most people may think I would have probably produced due to my bubbly nature, but this I love!
The only criticism I have for this shot is that it is far too grainy, though this I can change and make my own. I think I would also like the eyes to be seen more, though I do understand why they are like that in this poster.

The problem I now have is, where am I going to shoot the background to roughly match the film poster of my choice. How am I going or even what am I going to add in the background.
However the biggest problem/task is to find someone to model for me, as 99% of my friends aren’t willing to take up the challenge (Camera shy I think is the best term)

2: I liked this one as I like the dramatic and powerful atmosphere it creates. Though I am not looking to have more than 1 person. This will be a backup plan just incase I change my mind. Also trying to fin someone to pose in their underwear (or short shorts) would be hard. Getting two separate images so I can have a reflection in the mirror so I actually becomes a mirror. I actually think this would be fun to shoot/create, something to keep in mind for any future projects I may have in mind.

I have had so many ideas going on in my head that just won’t settle down into one finalized idea. These are the three film posters I liked the look of, and thought would be interesting to recreate.

1: I like the Idea of trying to create this, however I wasn’t too sure if the background met the brief? Or more so, it wasn’t challenging enough. So I have decided it is to stay as an option.

I have been looking forward to doing this project, as it is something different to try out and carry on with after the unit.
However the problem I have been having before this assessment was officially set was, what am I going to replicate? Or am I going to invent a new movie poster using aspects of other film posters, or just create a new idea all together?

This my final Day Light Portraits. I am okay with them, but I do think I could have done a lot better that I have.

The first picture is of my little sister Ryah who is 6. This was taken on fairly cloudy day in the woods behind our house. Ryah loves going there, so I thought it would be a good place to do the shoot to make her feel comfortable and help me get the shot I required. I first wanted to get a shot with shadows of the leaves covering her face, however they didn’t turn out the way I expected. Instead I used the trees to defuse light from her face to create soft/gentle lighting. No reflector was used.

The second shot is of my friend Andrew who is 17. This was taken outside a coffee shop, which we visit quite often. While doing this shoot we where playing around with smoke effects, however again they were okay but I wasn’t extremely impressed with them, (I will be revisiting this idea in the near future). Instead we sat under an umbrella to defuse the harsh light away from Andrew and then bounce some light into his face to create some shadows with a reflector. I think one side is a little too dark, and also that I need to remember that Andrew now wears glasses, as some of the other shots that I liked, his glasses had to much of the reflector reflected into them.

The third picture is again of my sister Ryah. Unfortunately at this point in time when it had rained she was the only person around to take pictures off. However now thinking about it, to create this shot again all I needed would have been a spray bottle of water to create the droplets and use a different subject, a lesson learnt. Anyway this shot was taken on a day it had been raining and not long after the sun was splitting through the clouds. I had noticed on the voiles the shadows of the rain droplets on the glass had created and decided this would be my prop for flagging. It did take a while to get this shot, and many different compositions as the sun was hurting Ryah’s eyes. This seemed to be the best one. I think the eye area is a little dark and maybe I should have used a reflector. Though saying that I do like the outcome even with the slightly darkened eye area.

The fourth and final photo is of my very good friend Edith who is 21. She has just moved into her new flat in Glasgow and I went there for a visit this week. She shares with 4 other girls and she has the largest room with massive windows, so I thought it would be a good idea to use her & her windows for my window shot. The windows are curved and she has a round table in-front of them, which she sits at most of the time doing Uni work. So again I thought the use of the table in this photo would have been nice/symbolic for her. She sat down and instantly made this pose, I liked the way it looked so calm and thoughtful that I made her sit like this for a while, while I moved around her taking different vantage point shots. The light was a little to harsh so I closed the curtains that where thankfully white which bounced softer light into her face/ softened her features. I do like this shot and the colours.

The two colour shots seemed to have a slight purple tinge to them, but the final print they are fine. Many lesson have been learned doing this brief, that I will be building on to perfect

My self portrait seems to have been a hit with the class. It got described as bold and striking. I colours where said to suit my personality, though the dark side they found a little intimidating, that they would not like to meet that side. Overall I got mostly positive feedback. Though one point I liked was that I should crop the dark side quite a bit so the shot would be mostly colourful with a hint of darkness. They thought this would be better since everyone sees the happy hyper side of myself near enough all the time and that the negative side only comes out known and again.
I believe that I have successfully achieved the effect/ reaction that I sought out to create.

Please leave comments on what you thought of the shot. Would be nice to read them. =]

Self Portrait.

Okay, so this is my final self portrait. What I was trying to demonstrate in doing a split screen image was that even though I’m hyperactive, bright/colourful always smiling, which is hopefully comes across in the right image. There is also my secretive & moody (Don’t cross the line with me) side which would be the left image. The idea of putting them together making up a whole face, hopefully shows that without each of the different personalities it just wouldn’t be me.
